WHAT ARE THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME AN FAA CERTIFIED AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN?

There are two requirements that need to be met: basic and experience.

Basic - Be at least 18 years of age and have the ability to read, write, and speak English.

Experience - There are three ways to achieve the FAA required experience. You can work at a FAA Repair Station and gain experience by working under the direct supervision of a FAA licensed mechanic for 18 months for each certificate (Airframe or Powerplant), or 30 months for both. This standard is also the same for using military service to meet this requirement.

The most common way to become an AMT is to attend an Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS). Training at these schools lasts between 12 and 24 months. When you graduate, you will be qualified to take the FAA exams.

WHAT TESTS ARE REQUIRED TO BECOME AN FAA CERTIFIED AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN?

There are three tests required to become an AMT: an oral exam, a practical test, and a computerized knowledge test. The oral and practical tests cover 52 technical subjects and generally take about 12-16 hours to complete.

To successfully pass the knowledge test for all sections (Airframe, Powerplant, and General), use the Gleim Aviation Maintenance Technician Test Prep material. All courses have study outlines and practice tests covering the actual FAA test questions.

NOTE: Completion of the Gleim course alone does not authorize you to take the FAA AMT knowledge tests. You must either meet the civilian or military experience requirements and receive a test authorization from an Aviation Safety Inspector at your local FSDO or be authorized to test through an FAA-approved Part 147 AMT school.
