REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATE
  1. Be at least 17 years of age.
  2. Be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English.
  3. Obtain at least a third-class FAA medical certificate.
  4. Receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or complete a home-study course (such as studying the Gleim Private Pilot FAA Knowledge Test, Gleim Private Pilot Flight Maneuvers and Practical Test Prep, and Gleim Pilot Handbook).
  5. Pass a knowledge test with a score of 70% or better. The private pilot knowledge test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions selected from all of the airplane-related questions in the FAA's private pilot knowledge test bank.
  6. Accumulate appropriate flight experience (see FAR 61.109). Receive a total of 40 hr. of flight instruction and solo flight time.
  7. Receive flight instruction and demonstrate skill (see FAR 61.107).
  8. Successfully complete a practical (flight) test, which will be given as a final exam by an FAA inspector or designated pilot examiner; it will be conducted as specified in the FAA's Private Pilot Practical Test Standards.
PRIVILEGES AND LIMITATIONS
  1. As a private pilot, you may not act as a pilot in command of an aircraft that is carrying passengers or property for compensation or hire, nor may you be paid to act as a pilot in command, except
    1. You may act as a pilot in command, for compensation or hire, of an aircraft in connection with any business or employment if the flight is only incidental to that business or employment and the aircraft does not carry passengers or property for compensation or hire.
  2. You may equally share the operating expenses of a flight with passengers, provided the expenses only involve fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or airplane rental fees.
  3. If you are an aircraft salesperson and have at least 200 hr. of logged flight time, you may demonstrate an airplane in flight to a prospective buyer.
  4. You may act as a pilot in command of a charitable, nonprofit, or community event flight described in 91.146, if the sponsor and pilot comply with the requirements of 91.146.
  5. You may be reimbursed for aircraft operating expenses that are directly related to search and location operations, provided the expenses involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees, and the operation is sanctioned and under the direction and control of a local, State, or Federal agency; or an organization that conducts search and location operations.
  6. If you meet the requirements of 61.69, you may act as a pilot in command of an aircraft towing a glider or unpowered ultralight vehicle.
HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE PILOT
  1. Obtain a Gleim Private Pilot Kit. Additionally, once you begin your pilot training, purchase a local sectional chart, an Airport/Facility Directory, and a copy of your airplane's Pilot Operating Handbook (POH).
  2. Visit several flight schools, if more than one is available, to talk to flight instructors about flight lessons. Visit our CFI Directory to locate a CFI near you. Alternatively, look under aircraft schools, airplane instruction, aircraft sales, airports, etc., in the Yellow Pages. Indicate that you are interested in taking flight lessons and want to choose a flight instructor with whom you will feel comfortable.
  3. Make sure that the CFI is familiar with Gleim private pilot training materials (the books with the red covers) and is enthusiastic about using them. If you encounter hesitation, call (800) 874-5346.

Plan to speak to several instructors. While there are no perfect answers, the following questions should be asked. The objective of these questions is to gain insight into the flight instructor's personality.

    1. Do you instruct full- or part-time? This information concerns availability only. Part-time does not imply less proficiency or less availability.
    2. Ask to see the instructor's syllabus. Compare it to your Gleim Pilot Syllabus.
    3. How long does your average student take to solo? Note that the flight instructor who solos his/her students in the least or most amount of time may not necessarily be the best instructor.
    4. How many total hours of solo and dual flight do your typical students require?
    5. For the Private Pilot certificate, what percent of your students require more than 40 total hours? (Probably 100%.) How much more? A national average of 55+ flight hours is often quoted.
    6. What are the solo and dual rental costs for your training aircraft?
    7. Where do you recommend that I take my pilot knowledge and practical tests, and what are the estimated costs?
    8. What are the flight instructors' schedules and the schedule of available aircraft?
    9. Do you have an introductory flight for a nominal fee? May I take it with no further obligation?
    10. Where do you recommend that I take my medical examination? See www.gleim.com/aviation/amesearch.php
  4. Once you have made a preliminary choice of flight instructor, you need to sit down with your flight instructor and map out a plan.

    1. When and how often you will fly
    2. When you will take the FAA pilot knowledge test
    3. When you should plan to take your FAA practical test
    4. When and how payments will be made for your instruction
  5. Take and pass your knowledge and practical tests!
  6. If you have any questions during this process, please contact Gleim. We can give you answers to questions about learning to fly or aviation in general. Our "Ask a CFI" service is available Mon - Fri 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. EST.
