Refresher Course

The Gleim Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) is designed to increase your knowledge and abilities as an instructor and a pilot in addition to renewing your flight instructor certificate. It is a structured, interactive, self-study review and certification program that requires 16 hours of participation.

This course does not just fill the time requirement for renewal without regard to content. Rather, the Gleim FIRC makes individuals analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information to help them become better instructors and pilots.

Study Unit 16 of this course, "Flight School Security Awareness" is a TSA compliant lesson for both initial and recurrent TSA Flight School Security Awareness (FSSA) training. This Study Unit is FREE for CFIs and other flight school employees who are required to have annual TSA training. A TSA-compliant certificate of completion is provided at the end of this study unit.

Once again, Gleim has made my CFI renewal such a pleasure, and a great learning experience. Although every two years there are constant attempts to be "swayed" to competitors renewal courses -- I know better! I sincerely appreciate Gleim's FIRC from head to toe -- Thank you once again!
- Guy Russo

April, 2014
I believe this is a very effective and efficient way to complete recurrence training. The syllabi are helpful and complete, the exams seem fair and comprehensive. I will use Gleim again in 2 years.

I received my permanent certificate in the mail last week. I wanted to thank you again for the excellent online course you offer for CFI renewal. Having renewed now a great many times through course attendance, experience, check rides, and online courses since 1980, I can say hands-down that on-line course and renewal is the most productive use of time and most inexpensive way to renew! Thanks again, and keep up the excellent work!
- Thomas Hannigan, CFI ASME IA, Instructor of Aerospace Engineering, Mississippi State University

I enjoy the convenience of the Gleim FIRC. You can complete the program at your own pace, doing one or more lessons per day as your personal schedule permits. I like the feature that you can log out at any time you want to stop, then when you log back in you can resume where you left off. I also like the feature that for $25 you can have Gleim submit your paperwork to the FAA without having to take the time and expense of traveling to an FAA facility to submit your paperwork. I like the feature that Gleim will send you a temporary certificate when they receive your paperwork. The on-line training is intuitive, easy to use and is reliable.

Excellent learning experience with absolutely no technical glitches--Gleim's user-friendly format is something that is a rarity these days. Some of the material was familiar, but I also learned a great deal about material that was less familiar. If I wasn't already employed, I would be tempted to complete Gleim's electronic employment application!
- Terry Leap

January, 2014
I tried another online FIRC and it was painful. The web site was difficult to navigate. I was frustrated and running out of time to renew. Another CFI told me to try Gleim. Best decision I have ever made. I do not have high speed internet but it does not matter. I have never had an issue with the Gleim web site and the course material is excellent.
- Kenneth Miles

January, 2014
I have used the Gleim course on several occasions, at least 4 times now for my CFI renewal. I really like it and the course has only improved each time, keeping step with regulatory, and technological advances. The Gleim course is not only a good learning tool but also a great teaching tool. Now I do not only use Gleim for my FIRC but also my RVSM because it is informative, convenient and cost effective. Thank you Gleim!
- Ronald Fernuik

January, 2014
An excellent course to renew an instructors rating. Subject areas are continually being updated to assure their relevance in the training environment. Thought-provoking study outlines can be used as a continuing teaching tool. Makes a great resource as a reference guide for all levels of instructors, from first time renewals to seasoned veterans. Customer support is excellent. I have used this course for many renewal cycles and will continue to not only use it myself, but recommend it to all instructors approaching recertification.
- Thomas Stein

January, 2014
Relieved to be completed. Another FIRC completed with Gleim. After checking around, and inquiring with other instructors, I returned to Gleim, and glad I did. Always learning something, and reevaluating the way I instruct. My students and I both benefit -- Thanks, 33 years instructing and still having fun.
- Alan Leroy

December, 2013
I recommend the Gleim Products to every Student or CFI because in my observation, Gleim Products are the most comprehensive and therefore the most beneficial for both Students and CFIs.
- Roger Bartels

December, 2013
Very good outline, especially in my situation. I am currently not actively flying in the USA and this refresher is a great tool for me to re-familiarize myself with FAR's and to gain knowledge regarding changes / amendments.
- Sebastiaan Theelen

December, 2013
At my age (81) I was able to comprehend the information.
- Roscoe Hunt

December, 2013
This was my first on line FIRC. I've been a CFI-I since 1972 and renewed in several different ways, but this was the best. I learned much more than sitting in a classroom for 16 hours. I go back far enough to remember when the first ones were conducted by the FAA for 24 hours! Now THAT was a challenge as well as being extremely BORING... Thanks very much for this. I'll do it again in two years.

December, 2013
Great program. I travel all over the world and I love that I can take the course from anywhere, on any device.
- Darren Pleasance

November, 2013
I have been a CFI for over 40 years and this is the best way to get the latest and most accurate info without spending time and money away from my family and still feel that warm fuzzy. Great program. Believe me, if it were not for your program there would be a lot less Flight Instructors around.
- Kent Mosdale

November, 2013
When I attempted to purchase my FIRC course from the vendor I have used for the last 12 plus years, my request for purchase was redirected to another provider. I previewed the product and made a purchase thinking the structure and format would not have been drastically changed from my previous providers format, which had provided the ability to print each subject area for study and future review as needed. After making the purchase, I discovered that I had to wait for a package to be mailed to my residence in order for me to receive a coded access number for my FIRC course. The course structure, which had the same topic subjects and number of lessons as my Gleim course, was a series of audio and video presentations that were followed by a five question test. The quality of the video and audio presenters made it very difficult to maintain my focus level to the extent needed in order to absorb the enormous amount of material that was covered and then tested by a five question test. It turned out to be a very frustrating process that did nothing to enhance or improve my knowledge level for my CFI renewal. At the suggestion of another CFI associate I logged onto Gleim's web site and was given the opportunity to actually "test fly" the course before making a purchase. I greatly appreciated this process because I was able to evaluate the course and know exactly what I was getting before making my purchase. The 20 T/F questions that preceded each study unit is an excellent process to focus the learners attention on that respective subject area. I was not dissatisfied with my previous vendor's format, but Gleim's format is a superior presentation and of a far greater value as a learning tool. I will definitely use your product when it comes time to again renew my CFI.
- Greg Word

October, 2013
I have used Gleim now for the past 2 CFI renewals and their process has so far been awesome! Very user friendly and prompt when it comes to the actual renewal. I look forward to using Gleim when it comes time to renew my CFI again!!
- Terrence M.

October, 2013
I completed this course while on a 3 week global business trip. It was very convenient and full of valuable information I can use immediately. Thought provoking.
- Tim Kreiner

September, 2013
Thank you for providing such an excellent online resource with which to renew my flight instructor certificate. Your course is the best FIRC that I have ever taken and I have been a CFI since 1997, have attended in person renewals, and another online course with a competitor. I took my initial CFI training with a part 141 flight school, however, had I known how outstanding your material, graphics, and easy to access links were, that are contained throughout the FIRC modules, I probably would have taken my initial CFI training with Gleim, if I had it all to do over again. I even completed my required annual Airport Security Training while completing your FIRC. Thanks Gleim for offering such an awesome course online.
- Annette Jones

September, 2013
I used have used Gleim since 1973. The FIRC is very good and I highly recommend it. Another CFI used a competitor, he will not buy that product again. I believe he will move to Gleim next time based on my positive comments. I used the outline all the time for safety briefings and review. Money well spent.
- Jim Harris

August, 2013
This is now, I believe my 4th FIRC with Gleim. When the time comes for renewal, I receive all the mailings from various companies, but always select Gleim. I've always believed that value has overwhelmingly exceeded the cost. I've recommended it to all CFIs I know. The Gleim approach could not be more practical. I find myself visualizing what is being covered in the lesson. Thank you - again - for another informative and excellent FIRC experience. See you in 2 years!
- Bradley Smith

August, 2013
Initially I was slightly reluctant to change from my usual CFI Refresher course to Gleim's. After talking to several other CFIs your courses came highly recommended. I am impressed with the content and format of the CFI Refresher Course and hopefully completing this course will make me a better instructor. Needless to say, I am extremely happy I made the change to Gleim.
- Anonymous

August, 2013
I have taken several different CFI renewal courses over the past 30 years, including several from GLEIM. This particular course was the best I have had in terms of content, particularly with respect to the relative importance and direct relationship to what I actually use as a CFI and CFII. Kudos and outstanding job by the people that put this course together.
- Robert Thrush

August, 2013
I have used other internet based FIRC before, but Gleim's is the one I switched to several years ago. For sure, I will stick with it for the next time as well, because instead of overly focusing on elementary rules and regulations, it encompasses the bigger picture of safety and proficiency.

August, 2013
This was a fantastic review. This course thoroughly goes through the material. I liked the 20 questions reviews at the beginning of each chapter. The information provided with each answer is very useful. It also makes each study unit outline easier to read as all the explanation given in the 20 question quiz is repeated in the outlines. To read the information twice makes for a good review. It provides a better chance to remember the material. Thanks for this amazing course! Definitely will recommend it to CFI fellows!

Typical extremely high quality training and efficient method of presenting the information, both refresher and new, regarding the ideas, methods, and concepts of teaching flying. I've been flying since 1986, student, private, instrument, commercial, CFI, CFI-IA, and taught both cockpit and ground for 8 years. While the school I taught for used a competitor's curriculum, it tended to be, sometimes too arcane (and pretty graphics don't make up or ease the learning process) and pedantic. Thus, I required my students to supplement the competitor's 20 pound textbook with the same texts and learning tools that allowed me to be successful in my knowledge studies. "The Red Books" as we call them: your manuals. In teaching 16 ground school semesters of primary and instrument, and over 40 successful check rides by my students (a 95% pass rate...), I can state, without a doubt, that your teaching method really does drive the information home in a way that no others do. And this course, to renew my CFI, just confirms the excellence of your method. Thank you.
- Bryan Boyle

July, 2013
I have been using Gleim FIRC online training for over ten years now. I am completely satisfied with this product! I will use your product again in two years.
- David Fascher

July, 2013
The course is very fair, and contains much needed information for CFI's to be well informed. Also any new info since my last renewal is included. Also I like the tips and hints as I negotiated through the course, to help make me the best instructor that I can be. Thanks.
- Francis Yodice

July, 2013
The Gleim course was fantastic. I, of course waited until the last few weeks to renew my CFI and hoped I could get through it in a timely manner. I finished it easily and learned more than I expected. This course is highly recommended. Thanks Gleim!
- Shannon Youakim

July, 2013
Great job gleim! This is my 3rd CFII renewal with your FIRC. A+ Job. The material was easy to follow, and the format of t/f questions, study guide, test works great for me. Thanks again and see you in 2 years!
- Anthony Canale

July, 2013
I am always very pleased to use any Gleim products. In addition, I asked a question on something I did not understand, and received a very detailed email within 24 hours.
- Joseph Gugliotta

July, 2013
Have used a competitor's FIRC in the past. It is no longer available and I'm glad! Your program is by far superior. I enjoyed the concise and well written study units. I learned a lot and feel sufficiently updated on current best practices. Well thought out and simple. Thanks.
- Kelly Stuhaan-Pochan

June, 2013
As a Master CFII I am renewed every two years on the basis of my "Masters". I felt that this was not enough and took this course. In my opinion this is the best course for revalidation I have ever taken. I can assure you I will be taking this course every two years and in between I'll be taking the rest of your courses.
- John (Rock) Rockcastle

June, 2013
I have tried two other online FIRC courses, I don't know why I was expecting something better than the Gleim course, needless to say I will not waste my time searching for something better when the best is already at hand.
- Sven Medina

May, 2013
Gleim offers a CFI renewal which is easy to use and adaptable to any schedule. Regardless of my student loads as a pilot, I have used Gleim time and time again. Gleim's CFI refresher course is excellent at ensuring I am up to date on any regulation change I may have missed in the GA community. I recommend this course to past students, CFI peers, and professional pilots who may not actively teach but wish to maintain their CFI currency. Thanks Gleim, see you in two years!
- Melanie Blind

May, 2013
This course is very educational and I like the fact that you can process my ACR for me. The money I save in gas driving to the FSDO is well worth the fee! I really like the fact that I can go at my own pace, and not one that you choose for me! Thanks for helping me keep my CFI for another 2 years!
- Andrew McCaddin

May, 2013
As before, I find Gleim's approach to the FIRC to be extremely effective and comprehensive. It meets my needs to have a concise approach to recurrent training. I keep the modules available for later reference.
- Jeff Marsh, PhD CFI/AIM/AGI

May, 2013
I utilized the Gleim study guides for all of my original Flight Instructor ratings preparation, several years ago, and I have now completed my second FIRC by means of the Gleim on-line course. The thoroughness and usefulness of the provided information is superb. I have recommended Gleim to my students and my fellow flight instructors -- and I shall continue to do so in the future. Thank you for providing a convenient and quality product!
- Daniel Schwartz, CFI, CFII, MEI

May, 2013
Once again, I'm very satisfied with the Gleim FIRC program. As I have indicated in previous years, what I value the most about the Gleim program is that it is in a very familiar format; one that I have used and recommended my students use for many years. I also like that the online process allows me to access the course material in multiple locations. It's a thoughtful course with important updates and many opportunities to acquire or re-acquire new and updated knowledge on the variety of topics included. I always save the course outlines on my computer and in a folder for later reference. Thanks.

May, 2013
I was able to take my time, absorb the material in my own time and at my own pace. The Gleim material is well presented, very methodical and allows for review. I have used this course now for several renewals and have found this course best suited to my schedule. Thanks.
- Leslie Briggs

April, 2013
This is the first on-line course that I've used for renewal. I always chose to sit in a class room for two days and get it over with. This has opened my eyes to the on-line method. I prefer this. I was able to do it at my own pace and actually read the material and not just go through the motions.
- Anonymous

April, 2013
I thought the course was very thorough and I truly enjoyed the lesson outlines. I will try and incorporate many of the ideas and concepts that I learned here. Overall I am very happy I chose Gleim FIRC.

April, 2013
Gleim has been one of my favorite publishers for over 20 years. The chapter summaries and organization are superb and second to none!
- Mark Kotlarczyk

April, 2013
I have completed my FIRC renewal utilizing Gleim at least 4 times and I wouldn't use any other. Excellent customer service also. Thank you.

April, 2013
Great course! I have used it every time i renew. Fast and very convenient. Saves a trip to the FSDO. I highly recommend this program!
- Captain DR Wall

April, 2013
The Gleim course was excellent. It was a good review. Having instructed for a few decades, it comes naturally to me to create training scenarios, however, it is much more difficult to systematically, and methodically transfer that ADM to students in a fashion they can understand. This course reminds me that what I find easy with ADM students can often find quite challenging.
- David Thompson

March, 2013
I received every which way & find Gleim's CFI Refresher Course the Best - just Excellent! Outstanding format, True or False study, material outlines, & pertinent 10 questions test.
- Shawn Hollick

March, 2013
I thought this was the best program I have used for CFI renewal. Even though I have used Gleim FIRC previously, I think you have perfected it to the point it tops any other FIRC provider.
- Robert Bagby

March, 2013
I just completed my CFI renewal with Gleim. This was the first time I used the Gleim Course. It was the most educational renewal program in my 30 years as a CFI.
- Charles Levandoski, CFII ASMEL

March, 2013
This is my 4th time using Gleim, and yet I learn a ton of new information each time I renew. I anticipate that I will use Gleim for all of my own renewals as well as recommend it to my CFI students. Thank you.
- Wayne Manning

March, 2013
Allows you to go at your own pace. This was great for the sections that I was more current on the info, I could move more rapidly through them.
- Eric Peltier

March, 2013
This is an excellent course with the right balance between rigor, robust assessment, ease of use and suitability for slow internet connections; this course is unparalleled.
- Richard K Barnhart

February, 2013
Enjoyed taking this FIRC. I always come away with an appreciation of Gleim's course. It is well presented, thought provoking and organized in a logical manner. Thanks.
- Steven Foshage

February, 2013
This is my sixth renewal. In the past, I have taken a competitor's FIRC but after taking the same course so many times I needed a change of pace. I am glad that I chose to take the Gleim FIRC. The course outlines were great, user friendly and an easy read. I truly believe that I learned more from this FIRC than the last one and even though it took about the same amount of time to complete, this time I actually enjoyed the experience.
- Perla Hernandez-Garcia

February, 2013
Overall I very much like your three-step approach starting with multiple-choice, through study to test. I retain more using this one-hour-at-a-time approach vs.16-hour intensive weekend.
- Alfred Bennett

February, 2013
Gleim online FIRC is simply the best way to refresh your CFI knowledge in your spare time. The lessons are top-notch, and I recommend this resource to all of my CFI friends.
- John Ruane

February, 2013
Great course, covers the changes that took place over the last few years and lets you study as fast or as slow as you'd like.
- Konstantyn Misyukevich

February, 2013
I have taken this course several times and find the material to be timely, up to date and useful for my reviewing what I need to know to be and effective instructor.
- Roger Dodson

December, 2012
Been using Gleim products since 1983, and this product continues to be top of the line. I have used potentially every product produced for flight training, and I still find no other product that is better than Gleim. Just keep up the fantastic work.
- David Morris

December, 2012
Wonderful weather presentation. Gleim breaks a complex area down so efficiently and makes interpretation of the weather to aid in the go/no go decision much more simple. The SBTs are very helpful suggestions for helping the CFI to better educate the student. Engaging the student in the judgement/decision process teaches them to think, rather than just be told by the CFI. Teaching and learning is happening, rather than just telling.
- Pamela Hengsteler

December, 2012
Gleim FIRC continues to impress me with the information contained and the method. I always learn more than I expect to. I also appreciate the convenience, I am able to complete individual tests around my schedule. Thanks for your hard work in developing this method of renewal.
- Anonymous

November, 2012
I always learn a lot from this course and use the excellent study guides frequently. Also, the course prompts me to "dive deeper" into areas I know to be my own weaknesses. I believe I'm a better instructor as result of taking these courses.
- Jeff Grelson

October, 2012
I like Gleim because you can go through it fairly quickly.
- Floyd Richey

Advantages of the Gleim FIRC

  1. The renewing CFI who attends a classroom course is "locked in" to a schedule of at least 16 hours of classroom presentations, typically given over two 8-hour days. For many people, 8 hours of complex technical study in one day can be less than effective, with the learning curve falling off rapidly after the first few hours. For the CFI who uses traditional distance-learning courses, passively viewing a videotape with no direct involvement can be boring. This is especially true if topics that the CFI is thoroughly familiar with are emphasized along with those that need review.
  2. The Gleim FIRC is performance-based. If you work hard and fast, it can be completed quickly and efficiently. The Gleim FIRC is targeted to your individual abilities, rather than generalized for a group. The Gleim course is Internet-based and consists of 16 study units, each of which can be completed according to your individual schedule.

Each study unit begins with 20 true/false study questions that are designed as a self-review and used to study the knowledge covered. The true/false questions are not a quiz; they are an interactive study program. You will probably benefit more from incorrect responses than correct responses.
  3. In each study unit, the subject matter is divided into subtopics called "subunits" making knowledge transfer easier to assimilate.
  4. The Gleim exclusive versioning system protects you from being caught in the middle of a course change. You never have to worry about hurrying to finish a study unit before a new version is released.
  5. Part 141 - "chief instructors and assistant chief instructors" may use successful completion of the Gleim FIRC to meet the annual requirement of 14 CFR Sec. 141.79(c) with FAA concurrence.
  6. You may stop at any point in a study unit, including the final quiz, and disconnect from the Gleim web site. The next time you log in, you will automatically be taken to the point (true/false questions, outline, or final quiz) where you left off. Your answers in both the true/false and final quiz portions will be retained.
  7. Certified ground instructors can request an endorsement upon successful completion to meet recent experience requirements. Visit our ground instructor endorsement page for more information. There will be a "button" to request a ground endorsement. You will receive an email when it has been approved and mailed. The endorsement should be placed in your log book.

Important Notes

The expiration month of a renewed flight instructor certificate shall be 24 calendar months from either 1. or 2. below.
  1. The month in which you present your valid and current flight instructor certificate and your valid Gleim Internet FIRC Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector.
    1. The Affidavit and Graduation Certificate expires 3 calendar months from the date it is issued. The examples below illustrate when to present the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to a FSDO and what month of expiration you will be given.
    2. EXAMPLE THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR MONTH OF EXPIRATION: Your current flight instructor certificate expires on May 31, 2011. You wish to renew your certificate by presenting your Gleim Internet FIRC Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO in person. Because you know you will be very busy in the months leading to your certificate's expiration, you elect to renew early (i.e., you are not concerned about retaining the same expiration month). You must successfully complete the Gleim Internet FIRC and present your valid and current flight instructor certificate and your valid Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO during that office's business hours (Monday through Friday, except legal holidays) in person during the 3 calendar months in which the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate is valid. If you present your valid and current flight instructor certificate and your valid Affidavit and Graduation Certificate before February 1, 2011 (which is the first day of the 3 calendar months preceding the month of expiration. See the table below for help in calculating the 3 calendar months preceding your month of expiration), your new expiration month will be the month in which you presented the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector (e.g., if you present the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate on January 12, 2011, your renewed flight instructor certificate will expire on January 31, 2013).
    3. EXAMPLE THAT WILL KEEP YOUR MONTH OF EXPIRATION THE SAME: Your current flight instructor certificate expires on May 31, 2011. You wish to renew your certificate and obtain a new expiration date of May 31, 2013 (same expiration month) by presenting your valid and current flight instructor certificate and your valid Gleim Internet FIRC Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector in person. You must successfully complete the Gleim Internet FIRC and present your valid and current flight instructor certificate and your valid Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector in person during the 3 calendar months in which the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate is valid and on or after February 1, 2011 (which is the first day of the 3 calendar months preceding the month of expiration. See the table below for help in calculating the 3 calendar months preceding your month of expiration). This allows you to retain the same month of expiration on your flight instructor certificate.
  2. The month in which Gleim processes your renewal and issues you a temporary certificate through the ACR Processing Service.
    1. EXAMPLE THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR MONTH OF EXPIRATION: Your current flight instructor certificate expires on May 31, 2011. Because you know you will be very busy in the months leading to your certificate's expiration, you elect to renew early (i.e., you are not concerned about retaining the same expiration month). You must successfully complete the Gleim Internet FIRC and complete the requirements for the ACR Processing Service by sending in your FAA Form 8710-1, valid and current flight instructor certificate, a notarized Official Identification Document, and your signed Affidavit and Graduation Certificate. If you complete the FIRC course and complete the requirements for the ACR Processing Service before February 1, 2011 (which is the first day of the 3 calendar months preceding the month of expiration. See the table below for help in calculating the 3 calendar months preceding your month of expiration), your new expiration month will be the month in which your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate was issued (e.g., if you completed the course and were issued the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate and Gleim has received all of the required documentation, Gleim issues your temporary certificate on January 12, 2011, your renewed flight instructor certificate will expire on January 31, 2013).
    2. EXAMPLE THAT WILL KEEP YOUR MONTH OF EXPIRATION THE SAME: Your current flight instructor certificate expires on May 31, 2011. You wish to renew your certificate and obtain a new expiration date of May 31, 2013 (same expiration month) by using the Gleim ACR processing service. You must successfully complete the Gleim Internet FIRC and complete the requirements for the ACR Processing Service by sending in your FAA Form 8710-1, valid and current flight instructor certificate, a notarized Official Identification Document, and your signed Affidavit and Graduation Certificate on or after February 1, 2011 (which is the first day of the 3 calendar months preceding the month of expiration. See the table below for help in calculating the 3 calendar months preceding your month of expiration). This allows you to retain the same expiration month on your flight instructor certificate.
Table Used to Calculate the 3 calendar Months Preceding your Month of Expiration:
Month your flight instructor certificate expires: First day of the 3 calendar months preceding your month of expiration:
JanuaryOctober 1 (of previous year)
FebruaryNovember 1 (of previous year)
MarchDecember 1 (of previous year)
AprilJanuary 1
MayFebruary 1
JuneMarch 1
JulyApril 1
AugustMay 1
SeptemberJune 1
OctoberJuly 1
NovemberAugust 1

NOTE: If you present your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector or Gleim processes your renewal and issues you a temporary certificate through the ACR Processing Service before the date specified in the table above, your expiration month will CHANGE FROM YOUR ORIGINAL MONTH OF EXPIRATION to the month you present your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to an FAA FSDO Inspector or, if Gleim processes your renewal, the month in which you graduate from the course.

How to Complete a Study Unit

  1. Choose a study unit from the Study Unit Selection screen. The 16 study units do not have to be completed in any particular order. Once you begin a study unit, however, you cannot begin another study unit until you complete the one in progress.
  2. To complete a study unit you must:
    1. Answer 20 thought-provoking true/false study questions. An ongoing cumulative score based on your first answer selection for each question will be shown. Review the answer explanation for each question. Once you attempt a question, you must select the correct answer before you will be allowed to move on to the next question. Answer all of the true/false study questions to move on to the outline. Note: There is no need to print out the answer explanations for the true/false questions. These will be provided as part of the knowledge transfer outline, which immediately follows the true/false section.
    2. Study the knowledge transfer outline for the study unit. The outlines are broken down into sections called "subunits" to make studying easier. You can use the print function on your browser to print the entire outline from the File Menu: click File and then click Print. Use this printout for quick reference. When you have finished studying the outlines, you will be ready to take the multiple-choice final quiz.
    3. Pass the multiple-choice final quiz with a score of 70% or better. You will be given a quiz of 10 multiple-choice questions based on the material you covered in the true/false and outline sections of the study unit. You may move back and forth between questions and change your answers until you are ready to grade the quiz. When you have answered each of the 10 multiple-choice questions to your satisfaction, click the Grade button at the bottom of the screen below the last question.
    4. Study Unit 16, "Flight School Security Awareness", begins with a 20-minute audiovisual presentation.

How to Complete the Course

  1. Complete all 16 study units of the Gleim FIRC.
  2. Choose the type of certificate you wish to receive. Available types are:
    1. Completion Certificate - You should choose this only if you do not have or do not wish to renew a CFI certificate. This certificate cannot be used to renew a CFI certificate.
    2. Graduation Certificate - You should use this certificate if you wish to renew your CFI certificate at an FAA FSDO.
    3. ACR Affidavit - You should select this certificate if you wish to use the Gleim ACR processing service to renew your CFI certificate. Note that Gleim ACR processing has an additional $25 charge. If you have purchased ACR processing already at the time you graduate, ACR Affidavit will be selected automatically for you. If you need to change to another certificate type after purchasing ACR processing, please contact Gleim technical support at (888) 874-5346 (8 am to 9 pm weekdays, Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm, Eastern), or via email at support@gleim.com.
  3. Follow all instructions accompanying your FIRC Certificate.
  4. Recipients of Graduation Certificates or ACR Affidavits may also request a Ground Instructor Endorsement from Gleim Publications. See the Ground Instructor Endorsement page for further details and requirements.

How to Process Your Renewal With Gleim

Processing your CFI renewal is easy and convenient using our inexpensive ACR Processing service. ACR Processing allows Gleim to process your renewal request and issue a temporary certificate for you to use until the FAA sends your permanent certificate. With ACR Processing, you will not need to make an appointment and travel to the nearest FAA FSDO to process your renewal.

Go to the ACR Processing information page to get more detailed instructions on how to process your CFI renewal through the Gleim ACR Processing service.

How to Process Your Renewal With a FSDO

  • If you do not wish to purchase the Gleim ACR Processing service, you will need to make an appointment to visit an FAA FSDO and process your renewal there. The following is a step-by-step list of instructions that explain how to process your CFI renewal with an FSDO after completing the Gleim FIRC.
    1. Once you have passed all 16 study units and completed the course, you will be given the option of renewing your CFI certificate directly through Gleim, using ACR processing service. If you choose not to use this service you must choose whether you wish to receive a completion certificate (for anyone who is not renewing a CFI certificate and simply wants a record of having completed the course) or a graduation certificate (to be presented to an FSDO by a CFI who wants to renew his/her CFI certificate). Renewing CFIs must choose to receive a graduation certificate.
    2. Once you have chosen to receive a graduation certificate, click Continue and you will see an Affidavit and Graduation Certificate. It will include your name, address, graduation date and certificate number, the signature of Dr. Gleim, and the Gleim corporate seal. Print this page. In order for this Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to be valid you must sign attesting to sole and unassisted course completion.
    3. You will need to make an appointment and take your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to your FSDO before the last day of your expiration month. Please note that you are now required to make an appointment to visit a FSDO. This may be difficult after 9/11. You may wait to fill out your FAA Form 8710-1 at the FSDO (you may want to call to ensure they have copies) or you may print a copy of FAA Form 8710-1 complete the front side prior to arriving at your FSDO. You will also be given a chance to print out the blank form after you have completed all study units of the course. Present to an FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) inspector your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate showing that, within the past 3 calendar months, you have successfully completed the Gleim Flight Instructor Refresher Course, your valid and current CFI certificate, and a completed FAA Form 8710-1.
      1. REMEMBER that, in order to use the FIRC Affidavit and Graduation Certificate to renew your flight instructor certificate, both your flight instructor certificate and your Affidavit and Graduation Certificate must be in the hands of an FSDO inspector before either expires.
If you have questions about renewing your CFI certificate, please contact Gleim technical support at (800) 874-5346 (8 am to 9 pm weekdays, Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm, Eastern), or via email at support@gleim.com or use our Online Support Form.

Additional Instructions for Overseas Applicants

  1. An overseas applicant who is unable to appear in person before a representative of the Administrator must present the applicant's valid and un-expired flight instructor certificate (hard copy), a properly completed FAA Form 8710-1, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application, and a picture ID before a notary public, a consular official of the U.S. State Department, or, if an airman, his/her U.S. Armed Forces Commanding Officer for completion of an Official Identification Document.
    • The same picture ID must be used on both the Official Identification Document and on the bottom of the reverse side of the Form 8710-1.
    • These documents must be received by either a Flight Standards District Office of the applicant's choice or by the Gleim Internet FIRC ACR if the Gleim ACR processing service is to be used before either the flight instructor certificate or the Graduation Certificate expires for a renewal of the applicant's flight instructor certificate to be issued.
  2. A foreign passport presented as a means of identification must be accompanied by another form of identification containing at least a matching physical description and signature of the applicant. If the form of identification presented contains an expiration date, the identification must be current.
  3. Please review the rest of the instructions for more detailed information on completing the course and processing the renewal.

ACR Processing Information

  1. Purchase the Gleim ACR processing service for $25.00. If you have not yet purchased this additional service, you may do so from your FIRC study unit selection screen at any time. You will also be prompted to purchase ACR processing if you select the ACR Affidavit certificate after completing FIRC, if you have not yet purchased ACR at that time.
To keep the same expiration month on your CFI certificate, you must complete the course and send in your paperwork NO EARLIER than 3 calendar months before the expiration month of your CFI certificate. See the About the Course section for more information.
  2. Complete and submit the FAA Form 8710-1: After you have purchased the ACR service, you will be required to fill out an FAA Form 8710-1 online, which is accessible from the "ACR Processing" button that will appear at the bottom of each FIRC course screen.
    • First, review the FAA's specific instructions for filling out your FAA Form 8710-1. These instructions will appear at the top of the FAA Form 8710-1 online.

The Gleim user-friendly Form 8710-1 interface lets you fill out all the information required with ease. Please note that:
      1. We encourage you to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) because it facilitates the maintenance of your records by the FAA. Safety measures are used to ensure that numbers remain confidential during processing.
      2. You must be sure to select all the ratings that appear on your CFI certificate.
      3. In section IV of the FAA Form 8710-1, failure and/or problems with the FIRC course do not constitute a "yes" response.
    • When you have finished answering each of the questions, you will be prompted to review your information as it appears on the FAA Form 8710-1. If you would like to change anything, click the BACK button on your browser and change the appropriate field. You will then need to review your information as it appears on the FAA Form 8710-1 one last time before submitting it.
    • Once your form is submitted, you will receive a confirmation that your information was received and stored. If there were warnings about any of the values you entered, these will appear after the confirmation. You must address all warnings by entering correct information before you will be allowed to print the filled-out PDF file of your Form 8710-1. You may complete your Form 8710 at any time during the course; however, Gleim Publications recommends that you get your Form 8710-1 filled out and sent in as soon as possible to allow the maximum amount of time to process your request and to contact you about any problems that may arise.
  3. Print the PDF files: After Gleim has received your Form 8710-1 information you will be able to print out your filled-out Form 8710-1, Bill of rights and Acknowledgement of receipt of Pilot's Bill of Rights Written Notification, and Official Identification document. Due to the FAA's policy of microfilming all applications, you must print these files on white paper using only black ink. The forms must be legible. Any applications that do not meet these standards will be returned.
  4. Sign and notarize your documents. Sign and date your FAA Form 8710-1 in Section V, on the first page. This must be an original signature, signed in ink. The FAA will NOT accept digital signatures. Take the Official Identification Document to a notary, and have your signature witnessed and notarized. For overseas applicants, the Official Identification Document must be completed by either a notary public, a consular official of the U.S. State Department, or (if you are an airman) your U.S. Armed Forces Commanding Officer. Note: You will be required to present a picture ID when having your Official Identification Document notarized. Please do not fill in any information that we have not requested you to fill in. Do not write in the name of Approved Course, etc., as this information must be removed from the 8710 and may require CFIs to resend the document. Also fill out and sign the Acknowledgement of receipt of Pilot's Bill of Rights Written Notification.
  5. Mail the required ACR documents and your CFI card to Gleim Publications, Inc.: Before you mail these documents, please make a copy of your notarized Official Identification Document and both the front and the back of your current CFI certificate. These copies will serve as proof of your qualifications until you receive your temporary CFI certificate from Gleim.

Collect the following materials and mail them to Gleim to complete the ACR renewal process:
    1. An original signed, dated, and notarized Official Identification Document (1 page).
    2. An original, filled out, signed, and dated FAA Form 8710-1 (3 pages).
    3. Your valid and current flight instructor certificate (1 page).
    4. An original signed and dated Acknowledgement of receipt of Pilot's Bill of Rights Written Notification (1 page).
Allow enough time before your expiration date for these documents to arrive at Gleim. Our mailing address and street address (for overnight carriers) are printed below.

Gleim Publications is not responsible if the above items (FAA Form 8710-1, Official Identification Document, CFI certificate, and Acknowledgement of receipt of Pilot's Bill of Rights Written Notification) are delayed or lost in the U.S. mail or by an overnight carrier, e.g., UPS, FedEx, etc. All of these items must be received by Gleim prior to or on the last day of your expiration month, and you must successfully complete the FIRC course prior to or on the last day of your expiration month or your CFI certificate CANNOT be renewed. Any FIRC user whose application for renewal is late or is not approved is entitled only to a refund of the cost of the Gleim ACR service. Please note that we have experienced reliability problems with the U.S. Postal overnight service in the past.

  6. Complete and pass the Gleim FIRC Course and fax or mail the signed Affidavit and Graduation Certificate: Upon successful completion of the FIRC course, the Affidavit and Graduation Certificate appears for you to print out. You must sign certifying that you had no assistance in completing the course before it becomes valid. The Affidavit and Graduation Certificate must then be faxed or mailed and received by Gleim, with sufficient time to allow your renewal to be processed prior to the end of your expiration month.
  7. Gleim will issue your temporary certificate: Upon receipt of all of your documents (FAA Form 8710-1, Official Identification Document, flight instructor certificate, Acknowledgment of receipt of Pilot's Bill of Rights Written Notification, and Affidavit and Graduation Certificate), Gleim will review and verify that the documents are in order and that you successfully completed the FIRC course. You can check the status of your renewal by logging into the course. The ACR Processing Status screens are updated when documents are received, when a problem is found or solved, and when your temporary certificate has been mailed. If your documents are in order, your renewal is usually processed within 2-3 business days unless it is within the last 10 days of the month as this is Gleim's busiest time for processing renewals. You will receive an email notification when your temporary certificate has been mailed. Please call or email us through our Online Support Email Form if, within reasonable time for mailing, your documents have not been received by Gleim, or you have not received your temporary certificate.

Ground Instructor Endorsement

The Gleim Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) is an Internet-based ground recurrent training program delivered via the Internet. Certificated flight instructors may use this FAA-approved course as the sole basis for renewal of their CFI certificates, regardless of ratings held.

Unlike flight instructors, certificated ground instructors are not required to renew their certificates every two years; ground instructor certificates are issued without an expiration date. However, ground instructors are required to meet certain recent experience requirements before exercising the privileges of their certificates. 14 CFR Sec. 61.217 states that the holder of a ground instructor certificate may not perform the duties of a ground instructor unless, within the preceding 12-month period,

  1. (s)he has served as a ground instructor for at least 3 months, or
  2. (s)he has received an endorsement from an authorized ground or flight instructor who certifies that (s)he has demonstrated satisfactory proficiency in the fundamentals of instructing and in the subject areas that are listed in the aeronautical knowledge requirements for the pilot certificates and ratings that are appropriate to his/her grade of certificate.

The purpose of ground instruction is to introduce the student to principles and concepts that will be applied in flight and to provide the background knowledge needed to make flight training both efficient and meaningful. Additionally, ground instruction prepares the student for his/her pilot knowledge test and his/her post-training flying career by explaining the meaning of regulations, the use of weather services, flight planning procedures, etc. Ground instruction may be given either by a ground instructor, who may provide only ground instruction, or by a flight instructor, who may provide both ground and flight instruction. Therefore, the privileges and responsibilities of a ground instructor are included as a subset of the privileges and responsibilities of a flight instructor.

Because all of a ground instructor's privileges and responsibilities are contained within the broader privileges and responsibilities of a flight instructor, it is the Gleim position that any person who successfully completes the Gleim Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC) has demonstrated satisfactory proficiency in the aeronautical knowledge areas that a ground instructor must be familiar with [listed in 14 CFR Sec. 61.213 (a) (3) and (a) (4)]. Certificated ground instructors who have successfully completed the Gleim FIRC program may request an endorsement from Gleim Publications to meet the requirements of 14 CFR Sec. 61.217 (b).

Accordingly, on request, Gleim will issue to any certificated ground instructor who completes the Gleim FIRC an endorsement certifying that (s)he is proficient in the subject areas that a ground instructor must be familiar with. The endorsement reads as follows:

I certify that (First name, MI, Last name) has demonstrated satisfactory proficiency on the appropriate ground instructor knowledge and training subjects of 61.213(a)(3) and (a)(4) based upon completion of the Gleim FAA approved Flight Instructor Refresher Course. Irvin N. Gleim 336304413 AGI (date)

Flight School Security Awareness

Flight School Security Awareness Training is a TSA compliant lesson for both initial and recurrent TSA FSSA training. It is included as a study unit in the Gleim Flight Instructor Refresher Course (FIRC), and is available free of charge for CFIs and other flight school employees required to have TSA training.

At the completion of the course, you will have a more in-depth knowledge of actions you can take to increase security at your flight school or airport, indicators of suspicious activity, and the TSA's best practices and recommendations for flight school security. You will also be familiar with current threats to general aviation security, guidelines, and security measures at your own flight school or airport. A certificate is provided upon successful completion of the study unit.
