The journey to becoming a CPA involves meeting several requirements for licensure, one of which is the experience requirement. While this requirement differs depending on the jurisdiction involved, the majority of state boards expect CPA candidates to complete 1-2 years of work in public accounting, and this work must be verified by a CPA. Until recently, you had to know a CPA, either by working with or reporting directly to him or her, in order to receive this verification. However, NASBA now offers a special service that enables you to have your work experience verified without actually knowing a CPA.
The CPA Experience Verification Process
The NASBA Experience Verification service helps both international and domestic candidates meet the experience requirement by facilitating communication with a licensed CPA. This individual will interview you and review your work in order to authenticate your time in the industry. After reaching out to NASBA to initiate the service, the procedure by which NASBA verifies your work experience includes
- A NASBA Client Manager assessing your specific circumstances and leading you through the application process
- A local provider verifying your work experience
- A U.S. CPA interviewing you
- NASBA preparing and submitting a comprehensive final report to the Board of Accountancy
On average, experience verification lasts 4-6 weeks but can occasionally extend up to 12 weeks. A NASBA Client Manager will walk you through every step and will even assist you in selecting the jurisdiction to which you should apply for licensure. NASBA states that either a phone call or Skype video conference can facilitate your interview with a licensed U.S. CPA, and they are currently exploring the possibility of providing a translator for the interview. In the end, you will have access to the report on your work experience as well as the final recommendation NASBA sends to the Board of Accountancy.
The CPA Experience Verification Application
If you are interested in utilizing this service, you must do the following:
- Pass the CPA Exam
- Meet the Board’s educational requirements for licensure
- Acquire 1-2 years of accounting experience
As your verification progresses, you will need to upload copies of your passport, certificate of name change if applicable, and a letter of authorization. You will not be asked to mail in hard copies of these documents.
At this time, NASBA only offers the Experience Verification service in the following jurisdictions:
If you have sat or will sit for the CPA Exam in another state, you may be eligible to transfer your scores to one of these jurisdictions to take advantage of the verification service.
To apply for the service, you must fill out the form found on NASBA’s website. Once you have completed the form, a Client Manager from NASBA will contact you within 2-3 business days. Receiving the experience verification also requires paying a fee. The fee is currently $500 for domestic candidates and $700 for international candidates. NASBA accepts credit card payments for this fee through their online application system.
