Garrett Gleim sends CPA candidates bimonthly emails concerning different aspects of the CPA exam. Candidates can see the most recent email and all the archives here on the CPA Candidate Forum.
Recently, Gleim met with the AICPA to learn about all upcoming changes to the CPA exam and exam news. This year the AICPA estimates there will be approximately 255,000 sections taken by candidates, and a large number of candidates will sit in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter is historically the quarter when most candidates take the exam, so prepare to see Prometric a little more crowded if you’re testing then! There will also be more candidates taking the exam now that the CBT-e dust has settled and candidates know more of what to expect.
This year, because the pass rates have been released much sooner than in the past, more candidates seem to be willing to take more sections per window. Since candidates now know their scores faster, they are able to get to the next section faster or start studying again if they were unsuccessful. This is a huge improvement over prior year releases wherein candidates could wait up to 3 months to receive their scores.
The CPA exam section that will change the most in 2013 is Auditing. Clarity Standards will be implemented in the third quarter of 2013. The AICPA also has removed a reference, Appendix B, from testing in the Auditing section of the CPA exam starting in 2013. Appendix B currently covers the differences between international standards and U.S. standards. However, even though this appendix is being removed, candidates will still be required to know the differences between the two.
The rest of the exam sections will not change as significantly as Auditing. As always, our materials are up-to-date so you can study without worry.
The AICPA will continue to grade the exams blindly, meaning no names or other identifying information will be revealed to them, and NASBA will continue to release the scores in a timely manner. Be sure to read the Content Specification Outlines for the 2013 exam, available here: http://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/ExaminationContent/ContentAndSkills/DownloadableDocuments/CSOs-SSOs-Effective.Jan2013.pdf
Good luck to everyone studying, and be sure to touch base with your Personal Counselor if you have any questions regarding your studies or any changes to the CPA exam in 2013. Gleim will continue to release updates, and the new Content Specification Outlines for the 2013 CPA exam will be reflected in the Gleim CPA 2013 edition.
