I'm happy to report that I passed my Flight Instructor Knowledge Test on the first attempt with a 91!! This was my first test taken with the aid of the Gleim Online Ground School. Breaking each section down into smaller parts was very helpful to my style of learning and allowed for much greater retention than I expected. Having a small test at the conclusion of 5 chapters gave me confidence that I was retaining the subject matter before continuing on. If and when I eventually pass the Flight Instructor Practical Exam and become a CFI, I will definitely recommend the Gleim Online Ground School to any future pilot prospects.
- Glenn Bergeron

April, 2016
As a foreign ATP-holder and Boeing 777 Captain, I am preparing to apply for an FAA certificate and Instrument Rating. Having completed the Study Unit 1 demo, I found the exercise invaluable in refreshing my knowledge which I learned some 20 years ago! In fact, I probably learned more by completing the demo than I did all those years ago in a classroom learning about aircraft instruments. I will most certainly be purchasing the on-line course to prepare me for the knowledge
- Jeffery Pooler

April, 2016
The time I spent on the Gleim Online Ground School for Commercial, I have to say, was time well spent. The scores on the practice tests kept getting progressively higher, and after the last one I felt like I was ready to take the actual CAT test. Keep in mind that simply passing the test wasn't really an option. I (as well as my instructor) wanted to make higher than a 90. I went this past Friday and took the written with a score of 94%. Needless to say I was beyond thrilled. I'm way more than satisfied with your products, and will use them again. I haven't used any of your competitors products, and don't have any plans to. Thanks again for a great online course.
- Richard Lee Patterson

September, 2015
Just wanted to let you know that the Gleim Online School was worth every penny. I was able to take the FAA Knowledge Test Private Pilot-Airplane and scored an 87%. The format of the course was very thorough, user friendly, and understandable. I hope to start flying lessons next month. Thank you.
- Lucius Harvard III

September, 2015
The final test provides me with the objective evidence I need to move forward to the next lesson. The combination of the study session and the unit final test with immediate response to the correct answer in the first and only after completion of the entire test in the latter, create an exceptional learning environment. It is to be commended.
- Paul Lauterbach

September, 2015
I took the FOI exam on the 18th of August and passed on my first try with a score of 96! I could not be more pleased with this program and the training I received. I was very well prepared and confident going in to take this exam. I finished it in 1/3 the time allowed without rushing. Piece of cake!
- James Romano

August, 2015
Extremely happy with Gleim. I took the commercial written test less than a week after purchasing your online course and scored 100%. Thank you!
- Josh

April, 2015
I purchased the Gleim Instrument Pilot Knowledge Test Book and On-Line Test Supplement a couple of months ago. After two months of using these products, I not only passed my IRA exam, but I achieved a score of 92%! I credit my performance to diligent use of Gleim's materials; using these products greatly increased my overall understanding of the topics required to pass the test and also increased my comprehension. At 61 years old, I was concerned that I no longer had what it takes to pass the Instrument Written, but I am happy to say that your products helped me to achieve my goal! Thanks Gleim!
- Mike Franceus, Temperance Michigan N1767G

April, 2015
I was able to bolster my confidence by using the Gleim Private Pilot Handbook to study before each corresponding unit in the Online Ground School. This course has changed my outlook on life, my attitude in tough situations, and how I perceive the skies above. Clouds will never look the same again. I am thrilled to be so well prepared for my next adventure in the skies.
- Casey Ramotowski

February, 2015
Last year, due to a job, I found myself in need of a FAA ATP conversion in a short amount of time. My interactions with the Gleim customer support were very positive and stress-free. I purchased the Gleim ATP course and it was worth every penny. The format of the course made wading through a large amount of information easy and allowed me to proceed at whatever pace I set. The course was invaluable to me; without the course I feel that the studying process would have been more stressful and taken much longer. Thanks Gleim!
- Ariel Pettigrew, ATP

December, 2014
Just wanted to say thank you very much for helping me to achieve a milestone on my way to getting my private pilot's license, which has been a lifetime goal for me since I was very small. Last week I passed my FAA Knowledge Test with a 90%.
- Tony Shoup

December, 2014
I am 25 years removed from any serious academic pursuit and approached this ground school warily. I would estimate that I spent a total of 30 hours to complete this course, relying on the guidance provided in the ground school kit. When Dr. Gleim talks about a knowledge transfer system, he could not be more accurate. I cannot imagine a more effective approach to acquiring the basic aviation knowledge necessary to becoming a pilot.
- Steve Johnson

September, 2014
After finishing my first Gleim online course, to prepare myself for the private pilot FAA written exam I have to say that this is the best way to get ready. It's really useful and easy to go through. I completely recommend any person who is beginning his/her flight training. Not being more just thanks to Gleim.
- Juan Ramírez Ruiz

June, 2014
Thank you for availing such a great course to people like me who love learning so much! I am enjoying every bit of it, particularly the topic on Characteristics of learning. I am an international student and the material is so easy to follow through. I will love to continue studying with Gleim and to recommend your material to others.
- Tinashe

Outstanding support by telephone and email. The courses are beautifully designed to enhance learning. The ATP book you publish provides all of the additional materials needed.
- Gordon Danielson

April, 2014
I would like to thank Gleim online ground school for making an easy to use and understand program. I purchased private pilot three and a half weeks ago and today passed my FAA knowledge test. I will be using Gleim again soon and highly recommend.
- John Williams

March, 2014
This is the first online Aviation course I have taken and I was thoroughly impressed with the entire process from the comprehensive study guides to the end of study tests and practice exams. I scored an all time high mark thanks to Gleim. I will include Gleim as part of my continuing studies until ATP and recommend Gleim to my students and fellow pilots.
- Martin Gyoroky, Canadian Class 2 Instructor and Professional Pilot

March, 2014
I passed the FAA ATPL exam successfully (88%) a few weeks ago. Many thanks to you. Your online learning program was an essential tool to success. Thank you 1000x. The ATP kit is very good because it allows needed transfer of knowledge in a very efficient & structural way.
- Michel Mesmaekers

March, 2014
I passed my FOI test on the first attempt using Gleim on the 25 of February 2014, I have been using Gleim since 1987 and Gleim is with no doubt the best online training course I have ever used. It is simple, clear and straight to the point. The course was not just to pass the exam but it is very informative, fun and easy to understand. Thanks to Gleim, as I highly recommend anyone attempting to take an FAA exam to choose Gleim!
- Garnett J Leerdam

February, 2014
Your courses are incredible. I tried "the other guys" and made them send me my money back after completion.
- HRSIII

January, 2014
Thank you very much for your course. I passed my written exam with a 92 back in May and then got my private license three days later. Since then I have gone on to get my seaplane rating and will be working on tail dragger next. I look forward to using your services again when I look to do my IFR rating in the future. Thanks again.
- Bradley A.

November, 2013
I have been preparing for FAA knowledge tests for a while now using various public resources. With the help of your ground school, I have been able to put together a comprehensive picture of what is expected during an FAA knowledge test. I found your material more in line with material the FAA knowledge tests presented, than other preparation material have I used, I was prepared for this. As a result of this, I was able to take, and successfully pass, on the first sitting, the FAA PAR, FAA BGI, and the FAA FOI, at an internationally accessible FAA authorized test center. I plan to continue using your on-line ground school content as, I find them unique and extremely useful, as I am more adapted to your type of course delivery method.
- Andrew

October, 2013
I am not a technical person and was therefore a bit reluctant on taking the test because I felt that my lack of technical knowledge would inhibit my ability to recall the information. The material was presented in such a way that I was able to recall and pass the first time around. Highly recommended study material and I am now looking forward to taking the next modules.

October, 2013
Great course, pass my written with flying colors.

October, 2013
One of the best purchases I have made in my young piloting career. This online ground school was extremely helpful and I passed my knowledge test on my first try! I was very nervous going into the test but I remembered all the tips I learned from this course and I was very confident once I started taking the test. I will DEFINITELY be back when it's time for me to go onto my commercial license! THANK YOU!!!
- Brian F.

September, 2013
It has been an academic pleasure and exciting mental exercise working through the Gleim Private Pilot Airplane Online Ground School. I am looking forward to using the new FAA knowledge I have learned during my FAA knowledge test, as well as in my other General Aviation pursuits. I would recommend it to any other General Aviation Pilot, who may need a quick review and confidence boost on their FAA Knowledge, as I do!
- Andrew Ojwang, Private Pilot

September, 2013
Best educational resource I have ever used.
- Adam Williams

August, 2013
I started to prepare for the FAA Knowledge exam on my own using a few of the standard texts out there. I quickly realized that my preparation was disorganized and inefficient. I tried another online course first and canceled after the first lesson. Luckily, my school uses Gleim texts, so I decided to try the Gleim Online Ground School. It was a great decision. The course is well structured, organized, and very concise. I was able to efficiently get through the information in less than three weeks. I'm not saying that it was easy, it wasn't, but it allowed me to go from not knowing anything about flying, to mastering all the basic information necessary. Because you are able to take practice exams in the actual format offered by CAT or PSI, there are no surprises on test day. I felt completely relaxed taking the final test, because I was able to do it repeatedly, in the same format, during my Online Ground School course. This is definitely the most efficient and effective way to learn. Don't waste your time studying from a book. The test is administered on a computer and that's the way you should prepare for it. I didn't just pass the test, I CRUSHED IT.
- Doug Christenson

July, 2013
I want to thank you and the Gleim company for an outstanding Instrument Pilot Course. It is my pleasure to let you know that I took the test today and passed it with a 97! The course was very thorough and prepared me for my success! I thought about several other courses but am very happy that I chose Gleim. Also, it was nice to speak to such nice helpful people on the phone.
- Trey Brewer

June, 2013
I just got out of the testing center and I passed with a 90% mark. Your course is very well designed and it prepares any candidates to pass the test without any difficulties.
- Tanguy Castric

May, 2013
I would like to take this opportunity to say your online ground school was the best preparation for the FAA test I have seen on the market. I liked all the repetition, the study mode, and stage tests, and the large question database (other products have a much more limited database). I also purchased a hardcopy of your Sport Pilot Maneuvers and I think the combination of the two is the best organized, most comprehensive, and well thought out reference I have seen. At first, I loved all the DVDs out there and shunned the "plainness" of the Gleim resources, but now I really appreciate that simplicity! You get right down to business in the most efficient way possible. I have learned that I can really trust that Gleim has got all the regs and knowledge covered!
- TC

April, 2013
I took the instrument written test last Friday and received a high passing score. I am very pleased with the Gleim program and highly recommend it to aspiring pilots.
- Dan Cedrone

March, 2013
I recently used the Gleim Online Ground School to prepare for the Instrument Knowledge Exam. The Instrument written exam is an order of magnitude more complicated than the Private Pilot written exam, and I am extremely happy that my school recommended Gleim. I believe Gleim Online provides the best training for the most reasonable price. Using only the Gleim Online course and the Gleim Instrument test book, I passed the FAA written exam today on the first attempt with a score of 93%.
- Dale Young, Private Pilot (Airplane) and Instrument Student

What to Expect in a Study Unit

  1. Each of the study units in the Gleim Online Ground School is divided into several sections referred to as Instructional Elements.
  2. To assist you in your studies, there are four Instructional Elements in each study unit:
    1. Audiovisual Presentation (optional)
    2. Knowledge Transfer Outline
    3. Multiple-Choice Study Quiz
    4. Multiple-Choice Test
  3. After each quiz you will be provided with an opportunity to review the questions that you missed.

How to complete a study unit

To complete a study unit you must:

  1. Study the knowledge transfer outline for the study unit. The outlines are broken down into sections called "subunits" to make studying easier. We recommend you print the entire outline to study from and keep as reference. Use this printout for quick reference. When you have finished studying the outlines, you will be ready to take the multiple-choice quizzes.
  2. Answer all of the thought-provoking multiple-choice study questions. You must answer all questions in order to continue. After selecting your answer choice, you will receive immediate feedback explaining why your answer was either correct or incorrect. Your grade on the study quiz is based on the first answer you select for each question.
  3. Review the questions you missed. After completing the study quiz, you will be prompted to review the questions you missed on the quiz. Analyze and understand why you missed the questions you did. If you did not successfully pass the quiz, you will need to retake the study quiz.
  4. Pass the multiple-choice test. You will be given a test based on the material you covered in the study quiz and outline sections of the study unit. You may move back and forth between questions and change your answers until you are ready to grade the test. When you have answered each of the multiple-choice questions to your satisfaction, click the Grade button.
  5. Review the questions you missed. After completing the test, you will be given a review of the questions you missed. Analyze and understand why you missed the questions you did. If you did not pass, you will need to retake the test.

Note: It may take a few minutes for your grade to be delivered. Do not click the Grade button more than once. Also, do not hit the back button on your browser to try to return to the quiz after it has been graded. Please email us through our Online Support Email Form if you have problems.

Completing the End-of-Course Test

  1. After you have completed all study units and Stage Tests for your Online Ground School, you will be administered a cumulative End-of-Course test.
  2. You will be required to pass this test.
  3. You will have two chances to pass the End-of-Course test. If you fail more than twice, you will be locked out of the course, and you will be required to send an email to Gleim Publications explaining the situation. It will then be at the discretion of Gleim whether you may continue the course or not.

How to complete the course

  1. Complete all study units of the Gleim Online Ground School in your chosen certificate.
  2. Complete all Stage Tests.
  3. Complete the End-of-Course test.
  4. Print out the FAA Knowledge Test sign-off form.

Background

  1. On December 5, 2006, the FAA released knowledge tests for Canadian reciprocity with the FAA.
  2. Canadian pilots who want to earn an FAA certificate must pass a knowledge test, which includes designated questions from the FAA's question bank for the specific certificate the pilot is pursuing (private, instrument, commercial, or ATP). No flight test is required.
  3. All of the issued procedures and processes for FAA Pilot Certificates and TCCA Pilot Licenses are covered in FAA Advisory Circular No. 61-135.

Advantage of Canadian Conversion

  1. Canadian Pilots, unlike other non-US pilots, may obtain US FAA airmen certificates without taking an additional practical (flying) test.
    • While these pilots must travel to a FSDO to obtain a temporary certificate from an FAA inspector, they are not required to retest in the cockpit.

Standard Foreign Private Pilot Conversion (14 CFR 61.75)

  1. A person who holds a current foreign pilot license issued by a contracting State to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (e.g., Canada) may apply for and be issued a US private pilot certificate with the appropriate ratings when the application is based on the foreign pilot license and meets all requirements of 14 CFR 61.75.
  2. The pilot must verify his/her foreign certificate with the FAA by completing a Verification of Authenticity of Foreign License, Rating, and Medical Certification, AC Form 8060-71, available from the FAA Airmen Certification Foreign License Verification page.
  3. The conversion then requires the pilot to prepare all documents and travel to a Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) to apply for certification.

Standard Foreign Conversion (Other Than at the Private Pilot Level)

  1. Foreign pilot certificate holders (other than at the private pilot level) may obtain U.S. pilot certificates only by meeting the eligibility requirements set forth in 14 CFR 61.123 (Commercial Pilot) and 14 CFR 61.153 (Airline Transport Pilot).
    1. These requirements include passing both a knowledge test and a practical test.
  2. The pilot must also verify his/her foreign certificate with the FAA by completing a Verification of Authenticity of Foreign License, Rating, and Medical Certification Form (AC Form 8060-71).

FAA Canadian Conversion Pilot Certificate

  1. Canadian pilots may obtain US pilot certificates by taking a certificate-specific knowledge test and submitting their test report and an Airmen Certificate and/or Rating Application (Form 8710) to an FAA inspector at a FSDO. This applies to pilots at the Private, Instrument, Commercial, and Airline Transport levels. The specific steps are:
    1. Submit a Verification of Authenticity request form to the FAA Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760, requesting that the TCCA verify the validity and currency of the Canadian pilot license and medical certificate in accordance with Advisory Circular (AC) 61-135, Conversion Procedures and Processes for FAA Pilot Certificates and TCCA Pilot Licenses. This must be done at least 90 days before arriving at the FSDO where the applicant intends to apply for the FAA pilot certificate.
      1. Download the Verification of Authenticity form from the FAA website.
      2. The form can be mailed to: Federal Aviation Administration Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760 P.O. Box 25082 Oklahoma City, OK 73125-0082
Or faxed to: FAA Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760 1-405-954-4105
      3. A FSDO must be specified for all processing.
    2. Receive written notification from the FAA Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760, acknowledging verification of the information in the application by the TCCA. This verification is valid for 6 calendar months.
    3. Prepare for your knowledge test using the Gleim Canadian Conversion Online Ground School. This product contains all of the information you will need to be successful on your knowledge test, with study units specifically designed for Canadian Conversion pilots.
    4. Take your knowledge test at a CATS or PSI/LaserGrade testing center. At the time of the examination, present proper identification and verification that contains your:
      1. Photograph
      2. Signature
      3. Date of birth, to show you meet the age requirements for the certificate sought
      4. Actual residential address, if different from mailing address
      5. Written notification from the FAA Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760, acknowledging verification of the TCCA pilot license at the same level for which the certificate knowledge test is to be taken
    5. Pass the examination by answering at least 70% of all questions correctly.
    6. Travel to the FSDO (an appointment is usually necessary; consult with your appropriate FSDO) and present all documents required for certification.
    7. Meet all 14 CFR 61.57 recency of experience requirements relevant to the pilot certificates and ratings before exercising the privileges of those certificates and ratings. Remember, you can now exercise the privileges of both your Canadian and your FAA certificates and ratings, but only if you continue to meet the recency and operational requirements in each respective country.

Applicant Requirements

Certificates and Ratings

  1. The specific ratings and certificates offered for Canadian Conversion are listed below, followed by the FAA rating code:
    • Airline Transport Pilot, Multi-engine - (ACM) Canadian Conversion
    • Commercial Pilot - (CCP) Commercial Pilot Canadian Conversion
    • Instrument Rating - (ICP) Instrument Rating Canadian Conversion
    • Private Pilot - (PCP) Private Pilot Canadian Conversion
  2. Type Ratings
    1. TCCA Airplane Type Rating holders that have converted Canadian certificates to FAA certificates can convert Airplane Type Ratings to FAA Type Ratings, provided the candidate:
      1. Meets the FAA age requirements of the FAA pilot certificate to be issued, and
      2. Holds a TCCA type rating appropriate to the FAA Type Rating sought.

Recap of Steps to Obtain a Conversion Certificate

  1. Submit a Verification of Authenticity request to the FAA Airmen Certification Branch.
  2. Receive written notification acknowledging verification by the TCCA of the information in the application.
  3. Study for the knowledge test using the Gleim Canadian Conversion Online Ground School.
  4. The Canadian Conversion ATP Multi-engine candidate will also need a completion certificate from an FAA Approved ATP Training Course Provider.
  5. Take a test at a CATS or PSI/LaserGrade testing center.
  6. Pass the examination by answering at least 28 of 40 questions (70%) correctly.
  7. Travel to a FSDO and present all documents to obtain a temporary airmen certificate.
  8. Meet all of the experience requirements applicable to the pilot privileges to be exercised in each respective country.
