CPA Experience Verification Service from NASBA

NASBA new experience verification service for CPA

The journey to becoming a CPA involves meeting several requirements for licensure, one of which is the experience requirement. While this requirement differs depending on the jurisdiction involved, the majority of state boards expect CPA candidates to complete 1-2 years of work in public accounting, and this work must be verified by a CPA. In the past, you had to know a CPA, either by working with or reporting directly to him or her, in order to receive this verification. However, NASBA offers a special service that enables you to have your work experience verified without actually knowing a CPA.

The CPA Experience Verification Process

The NASBA Experience Verification service helps both international and domestic candidates meet the experience requirement by facilitating communication with a licensed CPA. This individual will interview you and review your work in order to authenticate your time in the industry. After reaching out to NASBA to initiate the service, the procedure by which NASBA verifies your work experience includes

  1. A NASBA Client Manager assessing your specific circumstances and leading you through the application process
  2. A local provider verifying your work experience
  3. A U.S. CPA interviewing you
  4. NASBA preparing and submitting a comprehensive final report to the Board of Accountancy

On average, experience verification lasts 4-6 weeks but can occasionally extend up to 12 weeks. A NASBA Client Manager will walk you through every step and will even assist you in selecting the jurisdiction to which you should apply for licensure. NASBA states that either a phone call or Skype video conference can facilitate your interview with a licensed U.S. CPA, and they are currently exploring the possibility of providing a translator for the interview. In the end, you will have access to the report on your work experience as well as the final recommendation NASBA sends to the Board of Accountancy.
