Gleim Time Management for Business and Regulation

This CPA Prep Tip concerns the Gleim Time Management System.

A major issue on the CPA exam is time management. The only help you receive is hours and minutes remaining in your test with no guidance for breaks or time allocation to individual testlets.

Let’s illustrate the Gleim Time Management System for Business (BEC) and Regulation (REG) first. You must budget your time so you can complete four testlets within the 3 hours allowed. Recall that you cannot begin a new testlet until you have closed a current testlet, and that once you have closed a testlet, you can no longer go back to it. The key to success is to become proficient in answering multiple-choice questions in less than 1.5 minutes per question. Each BEC and REG multiple-choice testlet contains 24 questions.

Our suggested time budget is 35 minutes for each multiple-choice testlet (Testlets 1-3) and 60 minutes for the Task-Based Simulation or Written Communication Testlet (Test 4). This will leave 15 minutes of extra time.

Since the computer screen shows hours:minutes remaining, you need to focus on hours:minutes, NOT time on your watch or minutes. As you start each testlet the time displayed should be as follows:

Testlet 1: 3 hours 0 minutes
Testlet 2: 2 hours 25 minutes
Testlet 3: 1 hour 50 minutes
Testlet 4: 1 hour 15 minutes

Next, develop shorthand for hours:minutes. Signify 3 hours, 0 minutes as 03:00; 1 hour, 50 minutes as 01:50.

Use one page of scratch paper (provided at Prometric) for your Gleim Time Management System at the exam. Thus, as soon as the exam starts, write Testlet 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the left column followed by 03:00, 02:25, 01:50, and 01:15 next to 1, 2, 3, and 4 (in the right column). As you complete each testlet, note when you finish and then start the next testlet. Get on a roll.
