How to Complete an Online Study Unit

Gleim has divided the overall task of preparing for the CIA exam into 10 study units for each part of the exam. These study units conform to (or parallel) the IIA CSOs. Each study unit for Gleim CIA Review Online contains two 20-question multiple-choice quizzes, a 30-question True/False Study Quiz, and a 10-20 page Knowledge Transfer Outline. Use the following steps in completing your initial pass through each study unit in Gleim CIA Review Online.

We recommend you begin with Multiple-Choice Quiz #1 to practice answering questions that you are not familiar with. This will help you develop your educated guessing skills. The CIA exam is challenging, you will have 165 minutes to answer 100 questions; approximately a 75% raw score is passing. The Gleim system trains you to answer questions that appear difficult and require educated guessing. Taking a practice quiz prior to study will help you understand the standards to which you will be held.

  1. (25-30 minutes) Complete the first 20-question multiple-choice quiz in 20-25 minutes (excluding the review session) to study why you missed any question answered incorrectly.
  2. (30-45 minutes) The true/false study questions are an excellent study tool. They are interactive and most effective if used prior to studying the Knowledge Transfer Outline.
  3. (60 minutes) Study the Knowledge Transfer Outline
  4. (25-30 minutes) Complete Multiple-Choice Quiz #2.

Additional Study Tips

  1. Do NOT study questions to memorize the answers! Instead, answer questions under exam conditions for three benefits:
    1. Learn how to answer exam-type questions when you do not know the answer.
    2. Understand and learn from your mistakes before you take the exam.
    3. Build your proficiency to 75%+ before you take your actual exam.
  2. Remember, your purpose is to practice testing, NOT to study questions and memorize their answers. Thus, the fifth step above is crucial! Each question you miss is an opportunity to understand WHY YOU MISSED IT, i.e., did you:
    1. Misread the requirement (stem)?
    2. Not understand what was required?
    3. Make a math error?
    4. Apply the wrong rule or concept?
    5. Get distracted by one or more of the questions?
    6. Incorrectly eliminate answers from consideration?
    7. Not have any knowledge of the topic tested?
    8. Employ bad intuition when guessing?
  3. If you have any questions while working through CIA Gleim Online, please email your questions to ciaonline@gleim.com and we will be glad to answer them as soon as possible.
