You’re required to prove your identity to take the FMAA exam, and you can either show one form of primary ID or two forms of secondary ID. The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your authorization letter, your photo must look like you, and your signature must match the test center roster. These are the accepted forms of ID:

Passing score

The FMAA exam passing score is 200 on a scale ranging from 0 to 300.

The exam is scored by taking the number of items you answered correctly on the test and transforming them to this scale. No two candidates get exactly the same exam, and the questions asked vary from test to test.

ICMA uses statistical exam equating methods to ensure all candidates meet the same standards, no matter what form of the exam they take. So scaled scoring and exam equating help maintain standards and keep score reporting uniform regardless of the exact questions you get.

Getting your score

Your FMAA exam results will be emailed to you and posted to your profile 6-8 weeks after the end of the month that you tested in.

If you fail the FMAA exam, you’ll receive a performance report email from Prometric around 14 days after exam results are posted. The report will note what areas your performance was satisfactory, marginal, or unsatisfactory in.

You can’t test twice in the same testing window

If you fail the FMAA exam, you’ll have to schedule your re-take in the next testing window.

Maintaining your FMAA certification

Once you pass the exam and have your FMAA certification, you’ll need to meet IMA’s requirements for maintaining it. These requirements include:

Frequently Asked Questions
About the FMAA Exam

Should I pursue the FMAA or the CMA first?

If you’re a student or young professional entering the workforce, the FMAA is a great choice. The FMAA will set you up with the foundational knowledge you’ll need to start working in the accounting and finance industry, and having a certification can help you stand out from other job applicants. Once you’ve gained more work experience with your FMAA, you’ll be an excellent candidate for becoming dual-certified with the CMA certification.

If you’re already working in accounting or finance and are looking to move up in your career, the CMA is likely a better fit for you. You’ll likely already know the foundational topics tested on the FMAA and have gained on-the-job knowledge and skills that partially prepare you to sit for the CMA exam.

What's the difference between the FMAA and the CMA?

Although the FMAA and CMA exams cover similar topics, the FMAA covers a foundational understanding of topics that the CMA exam tests more in-depth and at a higher level of understanding.

The CMA is a two-part exam compared to the FMAA’s single part. The CMA certification also has additional fees and requirements, such as education, experience, and IMA membership, that the FMAA doesn’t.

When can I take the FMAA exam?

You can sit for the FMAA exam in the specific exam windows offered for the English and Arabic exams. See our exam window table above for the dates of each window.

Are there requirements before I can take the FMAA exam?

No. There are no prerequisites for taking the FMAA exam, which makes it perfect for students and young professionals trying to break into accounting and finance.

How long is the FMAA exam?

The FMAA exam is two-hours long and contains 80 multiple-choice questions.

Are there CPE requirements for the FMAA?

FMAAs must complete 15 hours of CPE each year including 1 hour of ethics.

When will I get my FMAA exam score?

You’ll receive your exam results 6-8 weeks after the end of the month you tested in.
