Effectively Using Flashcards

Using flashcards to study for the CMA exam

Learning best study practices from the experiences of others can save CMA candidates a lot of time and effort as they prepare for the CMA Exam, so we talked to Professor of Accountancy and Gleim Instruct video lecturer Amy Ford, CPA, CMA, about how she used flashcards to pass the CMA Exam.

Customizing Flashcards

Amy saved money by making her own customized, color-coded flashcards. Though she admits it is a little nerdy, Amy points out, “Color-coding the flashcards was a simple way to stay organized and focused.” Amy made new flashcards as she moved through each study unit and based her color code on the subjects of the CMA Exam. “The financial accounting flashcards would be blue, the cost accounting systems flashcards would be green, the internal control flashcards would be yellow, etc.”

Focusing Flashcards

To strengthen her weak areas, Amy only made flashcards for formulas she didn’t know. “There is no point studying the material you already know, but it is human to like to study the material we know and get correct. We have to work to reverse that inclination!” Amy also made flashcards for key terms she was struggling to grasp. She explains, “Any definition or key topic that I was missing in multiple-choice questions needed to have a flashcard.”

Improving Flashcards

For Amy, flashcards were not only her favorite study tool, but also a key element for her preparation for the CMA Exam. We hope that you follow Amy’s flashcard tips if you use flashcards to pass the CMA Exam!
