Allison Daniel currently holds the position of Senior GL Accountant at International Pipe & Supply, LLC located in Oklahoma City, OK. International Pipe is a steel pipe distributor and also offers a wide variety of pipe services. Allison enjoys photography, anything outdoors, and being a mom.

Week 1: Reasons to Become a CMA
Career Opportunities
In today’s society, continuing education is key to career advancement. I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in December 2008. While having my Bachelor’s degree is useful, I have found myself at a road block for career advancement. I am limited to certain accounting positions because the more advanced jobs usually require a certification of CMA or CPA.
There are four main reasons I want to become a CMA. First, as I just discussed, is the future opportunities it opens for me in my career. Simply having a Bachelor’s degree does not qualify me for most advanced or high-paying positions. Being a CMA proves to employers that I am knowledgeable of accounting rules and processes. It also sets me apart from other accountants who only have their Bachelor’s Degree.
Knowledge Update
Secondly, as an accountant, I need the review. It has been several years since I have been in college. I do work in the accounting field, but I do not use everything I learned in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. Reviewing for the CMA will be a great refresher for things I once learned. Another benefit is that I now have real-life experience. Sitting in a classroom learning is great, but actually doing and applying what you learned in college gives better understanding of how each transaction affects the financial reports and the big picture.
Lifestyle Convenience
Thirdly, the CMA certification process fits my lifestyle best. I do not have any other certifications. Going back to college is not an option for me at this point—I am a single mom to a teenage daughter who just completed her junior year of high school. For the CMA, I will not have to go back to college to earn higher level credit hours to be eligible to sit for the exam.
Sense of Accomplishment
Fourthly, it is an accomplishment that I can say I did for myself. It is important to set goals for yourself. I have set this goal to prove to myself that I can do it. It also sets a splendid example to my daughter that having goals and obtaining them has its rewards.
