How much time should you study for the FMAA exam?

The Institute of Management Accountants Opens in new window recommends 50 hours of study time to prepare for the exam. The FMAA exam tests more than rote memorization. You’re expected to apply principles and analyze situations, all while answering 80 multiple-choice questions in the allotted two hours. Read our guide to learn more about the FMAA and what’s tested on the FMAA exam

Key Points

  • You’ll need to spend around 50 hours studying for the FMAA exam
  • To create an FMAA study plan, you’ll need to identify your current level of familiarity with the concepts, study preferences, and schedule limitations.
  • The number of hours per week you study greatly impacts how long it will take you to prepare for the exam. For example, if you study 5 hours per week, you could be ready in 10 weeks.
  • Our FMAA Test Prep course has everything you need to pass on your first try, including: instructor-led video lectures, an expertly authored digital book, and an extensive question bank.

How to create an FMAA study plan

Everyone’s personal study needs are different, and no two study paths will look exactly the same. So it’s up to you to determine your level of familiarity with the content, study style, and schedule limitations.

You can start by asking yourself these questions:

  • How familiar am I with the material on the FMAA exam?
  • When was the last time I studied for an exam or took an accounting course?
  • How much available time do I have to study each week?
  • Do I have a deadline to become an FMAA by?
  • How long can I concentrate in one sitting?
  • Do I study better at night or in the morning? At a coffee shop or at home?

If it’s been a while since you last studied these topics or if you’re switching career paths and this is your first introduction to accounting, you’ll most likely need to dedicate the full recommended 50 study hours. If you recently took accounting classes in college, the content should be fresher in your memory, so you may not need as much study time.

Before you create a study plan, assess your weekly time commitments and identify any dates or times you won’t be able to study. Your study plan has to work with your day-to-day life, so if you always go to the gym or go for a run after work, block off time for that when you’re making your plan. It’s important to be realistic and set up a schedule that you can stick to so that you’re making consistent progress.

FMAA exam study tips

  • Learn from the answer explanationsEven if you get a question wrong, it’s still a learning opportunity. Incorrect answer choices are designed to be the results of common mistakes, so take a moment to review the answer explanations once you’ve completed a quiz. It’s important to know why an answer is right or wrong to make sure you’re learning the right lesson from the question.
  • Avoid memorizing questionsOn the FMAA exam, you have to truly understand the concepts and how to apply them. Use a large test bank and randomize the answer choice order so you’re practicing the concepts and not answering by memory.
  • Reward yourself as you complete benchmarksGive yourself a reward as you meet milestones in your studies. Whether it’s a special meal or a night out, giving yourself small rewards as you complete your studies will help keep you motivated. Plan your rewards and milestones in advance so you have something to look forward to.
  • Review the material after you’ve “completed” itRoutinely review previous topics as you progress through your studies. This will keep all the material fresh in your memory for exam day, regardless of when you originally studied it.
  • Take short breaks during your study sessionsWe don’t recommend trying to study for 8 hours straight. It’s much better to break that studying up into more manageable portions throughout your day. Study for an hour, take a short break (15-30 minutes), and then take a quiz on the topic you were studying. Then go back to another hour of study/review.
  • Practice time management on all of your quizzesAs you’re doing practice questions, make sure to keep an eye on the clock. On exam day, you’ll need to be able to answer all 80 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. As you study, try to get yourself accustomed to spending 1.25 minutes on each question. If you do this on exam day, you’ll have a spare 20 minutes for review at the end to go back to any flagged questions that stumped you.

Example FMAA study plans

We’ve put together a few example schedules to help you visualize how different study plans affect how long it takes to prepare for the exam.

Our FMAA Test Prep breaks up the FMAA exam topics into 9 bite-sized Study Units. You’ll find some Study Units more difficult than others, so don’t worry if some take you a little longer than others. Depending on your background knowledge, some topics will be easy for you, and some will take some extra study time.

Remember, these are only examples. Every person’s situation is different, so make sure to tailor your schedule to fit your needs.

5 hours per week study plan

50 study hours in 10 weeks
  • Study for 1 hour per day, 5 days per week
  • Complete 1 Study Unit every week
  • Spend 1 week on your final review

If you’ve got a full course load or you’re balancing work and studying, this plan is a good way to fit studying into your weekly schedule without overwhelming you.

10 hours per week study plan

50 study hours in 5 weeks
  • Study for 2 hours per day, 5 days per week
  • Complete 2 Study Units every week
  • Spend 1 week on your final review

This is our recommended study schedule for most people. If you’re able to study 10 hours per week, you’ll be ready to pass the FMAA exam in just 5 weeks.

15 hours per week study plan

50 study hours in 3.3 weeks
  • Study for 2.5 hours per day, 6 days per week
  • Complete 3 Study Units every week
  • Spend just under 1 week on your final review

This more rigorous study pace will set you up to pass your exam sooner, but it could be hard to fit in so many weekly study hours if you’re working or going to school full-time.
