CIA Exam Content Updates: What You Need to Know

man reviewing CIA exam changes on computer

The IIA has updated the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) and is in the process of updating and introducing new International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards). Candidates are concerned because this means changes to the CIA exam. Gleim is here to tell you what the changes mean for you, before and after you pass the exam.

Updates and New Material

The 2016 edition of the IPPF Standards adds a mission and Core Principles, but the central content (Definition, Standards, Code of Ethics) of the 2013 edition is largely unchanged. New and updated Implementation Guides (formerly Practice Advisories) and new supplementary Practice Guides are also incorporated.

The change likely to impact the exam the most is the addition of two new Standards (1112 – Chief Audit Executives Roles Beyond Internal Auditing and Implementation Standard 1130.A3), both of which will be covered in depth in our 2018 CIA Review.

For auditors in the field, the most substantive change is that the Standards, together with the Code of Ethics, now encompass the mandatory elements of the IPPF. This means that conformance with the Standards and Code of Ethics indicates conformance with mandatory elements of the IPPF. This alignment should streamline compliance and reduce workloads for internal auditors.

Test-taking Tips

The new Standards were approved and effective as of January 1, 2017, but are not testable until July 1. If you are planning on completing your exams before July 1, you will not need to factor them into your exam preparation. If you are sitting for your exam after July 1, Gleim is confident that the updates to our course (available June 1) will keep you amply prepared.

The IPPF changes will primarily affect Parts 1 and 2 of the exam. Part 3 should remain almost entirely the same. If you are ready to sit for an exam part and have already spent time preparing, consider passing Part 1 or 2 before the content changes July 1. But if you are unable to, do not worry! For test-takers, the changes are relatively minor.

Adding Value

The new IPPF is a change in appearance, not in substance, and Gleim is always working diligently to provide candidates with the tools they need to pass. We have taken candidate feedback and increased coverage of topics candidates have found most difficult. Heavily tested IT topics have received special attention, and our editors have written additional multiple-choice questions on a variety of topics, including corporate social responsibility. We are also adding more references within our outlines to Practice Guides so that candidates feel more comfortable navigating and utilizing authoritative guidance once they achieve the CIA certification.

Take advantage of our Access Until You Pass Guarantee and your course(s) will automatically be updated as we roll out new content, so you are always prepared for the exam you sit for. Demo Gleim CIA Review for free today to see why Gleim is the most widely used review course on the market!
