Gleim Time Management for Auditing and Financial

This CPA Prep Tip concerns the Gleim Time Management System.

A major issue on the CPA exam is time management. The only help you receive during the exam is hours and minutes remaining in your test with no guidance for breaks or time allocation for individual testlets.

Let’s illustrate the Gleim Time Management System for Auditing (AUD) and Financial (FAR). You must budget your time so you can complete four testlets within the 4 hours allowed. Recall that you cannot begin a new testlet until you have closed a current testlet, and that once you have closed a testlet, you cannot go back to it. The key to success is to become proficient in answering multiple-choice questions in less than 1.5 minutes per question. Each AUD and FAR multiple-choice testlet contains 30 questions.

Our suggested time budget is 45 minutes for each multiple-choice testlet (Testlets 1-3) and 90 minutes for the Task-Based Simulation Testlet (Test 4). This will leave 15 minutes of extra time.

Since the computer screen shows hours:minutes remaining, you need to focus on hours:minutes, NOT time on your watch or minutes. As you start each testlet the time displayed should be as follows:

Testlet 1: 4 hours 0 minutes
Testlet 2: 3 hours 15 minutes
Testlet 3: 2 hours 30 minutes
Testlet 4: 1 hour 45 minutes

Next, develop shorthand for hours:minutes. Signify 4 hours, 0 minutes as 04:00; 1 hour, 45 minutes as 01:45.

Use one page of scratch paper (provided at Prometric) for your Gleim Time Management System at the exam (see our example below). Thus, as soon as the exam starts, write Testlet 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the left column followed by 04:00, 03:15, 02:30, and 01:45 next to 1, 2, 3, and 4. As you complete each testlet, note when you finish and then start the next testlet. Get on a roll.
